24-Port Gigabit Ethernet Connectivity

The SWM281 provides 24 × managed RJ45 Ethernet ports, each supporting 10/100/1000 Mbps Gigabit Ethernet. This provides the port density required for larger industrial, commercial and enterprise networks while maintaining full management and segmentation capabilities.

The switch supports auto MDI/MDIX crossover, allowing straightforward connection of routers, gateways, servers, computers, industrial controllers, IoT gateways and other Ethernet equipment.

4 × SFP Fibre Ports

In addition to its 24 copper Gigabit Ethernet interfaces, the SWM281 includes 4 × dedicated SFP ports.

These SFP interfaces enable fibre-optic uplinks and long-distance network connections, making the SWM281 ideal for connecting communications cabinets, buildings, production areas and other infrastructure where conventional copper Ethernet distance is insufficient.

The combination of 24 Gigabit Ethernet + 4 SFP provides flexible hybrid copper and fibre connectivity for larger network deployments.

Advanced L2+ Network Management

The SWM281 offers extensive Layer 2 networking functionality including:

  • VLAN
  • STP/RSTP
  • Loop protection
  • Forwarding table management
  • 802.3ad LACP
  • IGMP snooping
  • Multicast querier
  • Port isolation
  • Port mirroring
  • EEE management

These capabilities allow network administrators to segment traffic, create redundant network paths and efficiently manage complex Ethernet infrastructure.

Layer 3 & Dynamic Routing

The SWM281 goes beyond conventional Layer 2 switching by providing additional Layer 3 functionality.

Dynamic routing protocols include:

  • BGP
  • OSPF v2
  • RIP v1/v2
  • EIGRP

Layer 3 features also include:

  • Static IPv4 routing
  • Static IPv6 routing
  • DHCPv6 client
  • Static IPv6 addressing

This provides greater flexibility when deploying the SWM281 across segmented enterprise and industrial networks.

VLAN Network Segmentation

Support for 802.1Q VLAN allows network administrators to separate devices and traffic into independent logical networks while using the same physical switch.

For example, one SWM281 can be used to create separate VLANs for:

  • Industrial automation equipment
  • IoT devices and gateways
  • CCTV infrastructure
  • Building management systems
  • Corporate computers
  • Servers
  • Guest networks

VLAN segmentation can improve network organisation, performance and security.

Industrial Protocol Support

The SWM281 is designed for more than conventional enterprise networking and supports key industrial Ethernet technologies.

PROFINET

PROFINET Class B conformance is available with the appropriate optional order code.

EtherNet/IP

Native EtherNet/IP support helps integrate the switch into industrial automation environments using Ethernet-based control systems.

MRP

The SWM281 supports both:

  • MRP Client
  • MRP Manager

Media Redundancy Protocol can be used to create resilient industrial Ethernet ring networks where network availability is important.

QoS & Traffic Management

Advanced Quality of Service features allow important network traffic to be prioritised and bandwidth to be controlled.

The SWM281 supports:

  • Port priority
  • DSCP priority
  • 802.1p priority
  • TOS
  • SP scheduling
  • WFQ scheduling
  • WRR scheduling
  • Rate limiting
  • Storm control
  • Port-based traffic shaping

These features are useful in networks carrying different types of industrial, business, voice, video and IoT traffic.

Network Security

The SWM281 provides multiple security and access-control functions including:

  • 802.1X port-based network access control
  • RADIUS
  • TACACS+
  • Pre-shared key authentication
  • IP and login attempt blocking
  • VLAN port separation
  • MAC filtering

MAC filtering can be configured to control which devices are permitted to connect through individual Ethernet ports, providing another layer of protection against unauthorised network access.

Network Diagnostics

Built-in diagnostic tools help technicians troubleshoot network problems without requiring additional equipment.

Available tools include:

  • Cable diagnostics
  • Ping
  • Traceroute
  • nslookup
  • System and event logging

This is particularly useful for remotely managed industrial and commercial installations.

Teltonika RMS Remote Management

The SWM281 supports Teltonika Remote Management System (RMS), allowing administrators to remotely monitor and manage compatible Teltonika network infrastructure.

The SWM281 is supplied with 2 years of RMS Management, providing remote management capability from deployment.

RMS can help simplify management of geographically distributed networks and reduce the need for on-site maintenance visits.

SwmOS Operating System

The SWM281 operates on Teltonika SwmOS, an OpenWrt-based Linux operating system.

Management and firmware capabilities include:

  • WebUI
  • HTTP/HTTPS
  • CLI
  • SSH
  • FOTA
  • Configuration backup
  • Firmware update

High-Performance Switching

The SWM281 provides substantial switching performance for multi-device Gigabit networks.

Performance Specification
Non-blocking bandwidth 56 Gbps
Forwarding rate 83.33 Mpps
Packet buffer 512 KB
MAC address table 8K entries
